Neuron electrophysiology simulator
A C++/Qt simulator of neuronal electrical activity, built from scratch for the University of Oklahoma biology department on the Huguenard–McCormick equations; used in teaching and research at several universities.

A neurobiology class used a powerful but outdated simulator of neuronal electrical activity. With the professor’s support I designed and built a new one: high-resolution reproduction of a neuron’s electrical behaviour, extensive control over ion gates and their analysis, detailed plotting.
The hard part was the equations. The non-linear interactions meant small numeric deviations changed the behaviour of the whole neuron — attention to the time step and to the plotting of each gate was what made the simulation accurate. Roughly six months of development; it is still in use for classes and research.
